The Last Night

It was late into the night. Long shadows on the terrace were interrupted by oblong shades of yellow from lights from neighborhood. She looked out into the dark. Darkness seeped into her eyes and heart. He hugged her tightly and the embrace, so familiar now,  made her forget the pain for a moment.

“I don’t understand why you’re doing this. But I support you.” He said. Her heart grew heavy. Tears threatening to swoop her away from the back of her throat. This simply can’t be the end!

She searched his face for any glimmer of hope. Seeing none, she held the side of his face she loves and said, “We can do this. There are people who do this.” His face but remained empty. “Just be patient and kind to me, okay?”

His silence spread into the night.
