#73 Frozen Mangoes

Winter is approaching fast and this time it is way more worry-inducing than the ones before. If I ever felt a slight weariness from being trapped inside while a snowstorm raged outside, this time, it is going to sneer at my face and ravage my sense of peace. It is going to take extra efforts and TLC to keep swimming.

And this is where counting my blessings and frozen mangoes join arms. I start by adding mangoes in salads. Then in smoothies. Then in curries. Then I buy dried mangoes. Then I buy mango pickles. Soon there is mango in everything. May be not in everything, but most things. So what is it that makes mangoes a hot winter favourite?

Mangoes remind me of home. With home comes comfort. With comfort comes the good happy hormones. It reminds me of the friendly fruit-seller with a cart full of mangoes and other fruits by the corner of my rented apartment in Chennai. It reminds me of the summer vacations in my aunt’s beautiful house surrounded by ponds and farms where I was allowed to skip meals and just eat mangoes while loitering among the trees. It reminds me of the big juicy mangoes that my father painfully extracts from the tree with a long contraption that resembles a lacrosse stick.

I can keep going.

I’m thankful for
